Jacob's name was later changed to Israel (meaning "Triumphant with God" or "who prevails with God"), by a mysterious man – an angel, in some versions – who he wrestled with and eventually overcame. (Genesis 32:28 Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.")
